False Sense of Security

Mission: S2:2: Best Laid Plans
Location: Infirmary, Canopus Station
Timeline: MD2 10:19

Aimee couldn't get the thoughts of two Shishimi on the station out of her head. It was as if something had wrapped itself around her brain and simply wouldn't let go, in fact, it was causing her to have a headache. She'd gone to the infirmary after muddling through three scheduled appointments two of which went quite well.

The third on the other hand...

It seemed that no matter how many times Aimee had insisted that she was, in fact, an adult the poor Ensign continued to refer to her as a child. That drove her completely nuts when people on the station did that with the exception of one person though. Doctor Murray had done it so many times that she just accepted his utter lack of understanding as the type of person he was.

She had grown fond of the Doctor despite the fact that she was constantly referred to as a child by him, and how it seemed that Doctor Murray always assumed that she actually was thirteen years of age. Despite that Aimee had simply accepted this and even presented an air of comedic response to his very presence and nature.

The perfect example of this was how she said he enjoyed jousting and had been knocked on his ass a few dozen times...

In all truth, however, Aimee had no actual facts to justify this response. He was an intriguing specimen for her to vent to and so when she entered the infirmary to deal with the annoyance of having a headache she anticipated his presence. Aimee was mistaken because the Medical Officer she'd expected was not there.

"Doctor Murray?" Aimee asked while looking around and she was about to speak louder when she heard footsteps coming from around the corner.

"Doctor Murray isn't here Counselor," Came the voice of one of the medical officers that had been assigned duties in the infirmary. "I can assist you though."

Aimee had steadily made a name for herself around the station. This meant that the requirement to wear her uniform had lessened over the days and weeks. The Doctor must have recognized her from a previous session, or from her being present on the station. Most of the crew had taken to calling her Counselor or Doctor when they saw her because they knew her.

She shrugged, "I thought I'd apologize for being a jerk to him yesterday," She mentioned as she went to the biobed. It was all in friendly banter anyway, she was certain that Doctor Murray knew that it was all in good fun. "Sometimes I do find his constant statements that I am a child and should be coddled a bit amusing."

The Doctor nodded, "I think he's just confused sometimes," He waved his hand steadily and grinned. "Now then, what seems to be the problem today?"

"Headache," Aimee answered.

Again, the Doctor nodded his head slowly before taking out the medical tricorder. "Symptoms?" He asked while walking around the Counselor.

"Do annoying patients who insist on informing me that a child cannot help them with their problems count as a symptom?" Aimee asked. The question was rhetorical, of course, Aimee didn't expect an answer to that question because she knew that it was not a symptom. Some days she disliked her job, this station, the people who lived on it, and the transporter bay that caused the problems in the first place.

Today was one of those days where Aimee realized she would probably never have a normal life ever again. She was, in fact, a thirty-year-old woman who looked very much like she belonged in school. Just the other day she was stopped going into her quarters and asked if her mother was home. Aimee growled at the person and went inside without answering them. At least encounters like that were less and less though.

"Don't we all wish," He said with a smirk on his face. "He stopped the scanning, have you been experiencing moodiness, morning sickness, anything of that sort?"

Aimee raised a brow and stared at the Doctor, "Moodiness is a constant thing... But, morning sickness?" Now it was her turn to be utterly confused by what the Doctor had just suggested. 'Why on earth would I have sickness in the mornings...' She thought wildly.

"The medical tricorder is detecting a pregnancy..." The Doctor said suddenly and was just as confused as the Counselor was.

"I'm... A what?!" She said and nearly bounced off the biobed and onto the deck below. "That's not possible I don't even... I can't even remember the last time..." She gave him a cold stony stare, "That thing," She was pointing directly at the medical tricorder, "Is clearly busted."

"Calm down," The Doctor said and put the tricorder down before walking over and drawing blood with a hypo. He walked over to the computer console and inserted it while also running a scan from the biobed to double check things. It took a moment before the results came back from both.

Aimee was staring at the Doctor with a scowl on her face, "What does it say? Triplets, quadruplets?" She asked sarcastically and threw her arms into the air empathically. "Hell, I might as well be..." She turned away with a low growl coming from cracked lips.

"Your hormones are out of balance again," He said calmly. "The medical tricorder misinterpreted the hormones in your system as being the result of a pregnancy. It's just a false positive," He told her calmly. "Now will you please calm down," He loaded something into the hypo and treated her headache, "That's what's causing your headache too."

Aimee scowled, "Okay," She muttered under her breath. "Please for gosh sake don't scare me like that again..." She said and dropped her shoulders slightly. Aimee looked at the Doctor, "Will these things ever settle out?" She asked rhetorically and wondered to herself if she would ever be able to lead any semblance of a normal life again.

"The way your body is in a constant state of flux and your constant hormonal balances are Counselor," The Doctor said while putting the hypo back onto the table, "I would be thoroughly surprised if you could ever actually get pregnant. And, even if you did I don't think you could carry it to term."

That was news she didn't need to hear, "Well gee thanks," She said and threw her arms again. The way she looked nobody was really interested in her anyway. And, truth be told she wasn't really interested in going down that dark and slimy tunnel anyway. "Well, not like I would do anything in this state to risk that..." She mused.

The Doctor tried to give her a warm smile, "Is there anything else I can help you with Counselor?"

Aimee shook her head as she bounced off the biobed. The headache was already starting to fade away, "I think that's all." She said as her heart steadily returned to a normal beating pattern. 'Pregnant indeed...' She thought to herself sarcastically. 'Medical tricorder technology is just the next level of quack medicine...' She concluded mentally.

Aimee was soon out of the infirmary and on her way back to her own office where she was seriously hoping would be a peaceful and quiet area for her to concentrate on other things for a change. However, as soon as she walked through the door she was sadly mistaken.

Her office was occupied by a couple of people... A married couple who were arguing and throwing their arms every which way. And, on top of it this was the same married couple from days earlier who had told her quite as-matter-of-factly that she was of no use to them.

Yet, here they were arguing until the door opened and closed and the abruptly stopped, turned to look at her, and then continued with their fighting only it was directed at her. 'I need to invest in a better locking system...'
